Meet the Interns: Alex Hughes

This month, the spotlight’s on our awesome interns—they’ll tell us about their roles at the Press and clue us in on their favorite New York things. Today, meet Alex, an editorial intern.

  • Name and role at the Press: My name is Alex Hughes and I am an editorial intern at NYU Press this summer.
  • Major/minor/year: I am a rising senior at Sarah Lawrence College studying writing.
  • Other internships you’d like to note?: I am an Assistant Editor at the online newspaper and media company, The Faster Times, and I was a social media intern at Touchstone Books (an imprint of Simon and Schuster) in the spring of 2012. I am also a part-time social media intern at the boutique book publicity firm, February Partners, this summer.
  • Why did you decide to intern with NYU Press?: I am trying to explore every part of the publishing world and [interning at] NYU Press offers a great way for me to explore the academic side of publishing.
  • What are you most excited about doing/learning during your summer with NYU Press?: I’m excited to learn more about the acquisition process of works and the way in which an original piece goes from a manuscript to a finished book ready for consumer reading.
  • Subject area NYU Press publishes in that most interests you: Sociology and Media Studies
  • Any NYU Press books in particular you’re looking forward to getting your hands on?: I’m looking forward to reading Judith Stacy’s Unhitched.
  • Favorite thing about NYC (or, favorite New York moment): I love having absolutely everything at my fingertips.
  • Is this your first summer in the city?: I lived and interned in the city last summer, but I’m looking forward to living and working in the village this summer, exploring as much as I can.
  • Favorite summer vacation: St. Thomas, the U.S. Virgin Islands
