The Pictograms of Migrants

Migrations and Mobilities: Citizenship, Borders, and Gender, edited by Judith Resnik and Seyla Benhabib, features a pictogram by the artist group kollektiv migrantas, made up of four migrant women, Irma, Florencia, Marula and Alejandra. Here’s their description of the cover image:

This pictogram is the synthesis of various drawings done in several workshops with migrant women in Germany. Since 2004, Migrantas has undertaken projects combining social science, graphic design, and the visual arts to explore issues of migration, identity and the dialogue between different cultures. The art that emerges from the workshops is displayed in public urban spaces. Migrantas has exhibited in Buenos Aires, Berlin, Hamburg and Cologne. “
